Xenochrony

Coming in at 30 minutes, and completed from start to finish in less than a week, I present another remix album in the vein of last year’s MissyKid (Missy Elliott Remixes).

This time around the bend, I’m playing with the Frank Zappa discography, and it’s a whole new bag of samples tenderly torn from their original homes in songs like“Apostrophe”, “The Central Scrutinizer”, “Peaches En Regalia”and “Dinah-moe Humm”. Overtop of the reconstructed (or not) samples & loops are my own influence of vocals, guitar, bass-lines, and drum sequences that bring a deeply oddball psychedelic electro-hiphop flavour to the construct.

This tribute is but a mere drop in the bucket of the massive back catalogue of the musical mastermind Frank Zappa, but the expression and re-imaginings of these Zappa favorites are a true homage to the essence of unique human musicality and experimentation that Zappa held integral throughout his career.

We can only hope Zappa (and Zappa fans) enjoy nodding their collective universal consciousness to this.

Xenochrony is a studio-based musical technique developed at an unknown date, but possibly as early as the early 1960s, by Frank Zappa, who used it on several albums. Xenochrony is executed by extracting a guitar solo or other musical part from its original context and placing it into a completely different song, in order to create an unexpected but pleasing effect. He said that this was the only way to achieve some rhythms. (Wikipedia)

Dragon Lullabies

It’s been almost 4 years since mantrakid has dropped an album. his debut 2008 piece ‘palmflowerblack’ put his abilities on full display, illustrating his range both as a producer and a lyricist. the release of ‘palmflowerblack’ unintentionally lined up with his departure from his home town of Calgary, AB to Vancouver Island, BC where he literally began a new life with his wife and their island born son.

Through the years that followed, and the further mantrakid felt from the scene he grew up in, he began this piece of music as simply a way to pour out his instrumental thoughts as they occurred. The organic nature of the samples layered with live instrumentation and thick smokey melodies grew from his introspection and analysis of his new role as a father then filtered through a lens of near-hurricane winds, expansive winding forest trails and hidden beach spots. Through an almost entirely instrumental album, mantrakid floats along with wispy backdrop vocal melodies and is joined on heavenly occasion by the ethereally pristine voice of Bee (Calgary).

With a combined timeless style unto itself, Dragon Lullabies seems to capture the best elements of a Portishead beat, lace it with DJ Shadow ambiance, and drop what could be a Beck vocal on top.
